Summer Sound

Glay has just released a new double-a-side single called “Natsuoto / Henna Yume ~ Thousand Dreams”. In fact it should be called a triple-a-side single. The video for “Natsuoto” video is available here. The song didn't evoke any great expectations for the other songs on the single, because it's a somewhat standard Glay ballad. The video though is really creative and interesting in style. Also, it's about the only video – apart from “Survival” – where the band is not actually appearing.

Although the title of the second song “Thousand Dreams” sounded like yet another ballad, I was very surprised on my first listening when I got the single. This song and the CW song, called “Lock On You”, are very different from what I expected, and different from anything Glay have done in the past time. They've been struggling a bit with their past singles, only writing standard songs in their signature style. Catchy as always nevertheless, but it had all been seen, or heard, before.

Not so this time. These aforementioned two songs are so chock full of unique ideas, creative and quality guitar riffs and experimental sounds that it's just a joy to listen to them, over and over. You really have to listen with headphones in order to get all the little details that have been crammed into the songs. And you can actually feel that the guys had lots of fun writing these songs, and that they have left all those standards that they were trapped in way behind. Several times while listening, I was laughing out loud because of the cool ideas and fun sounds. This is really great and inspiring music and the best that I've heard form Glay in a long time! It makes me want to grab the guitar and start writing songs right away. And if that happens, I know that I'm listening to some really good music.

Special video #1: A nice unplugged version of “Natsuoto”
Special video #2: “Natsuoto” yet again – one of those weird semi-playback Music Station performances.
